           Veterans Treatment Court is an initiative in the 7th Judicial Circuit designed to focus on the distinctive needs of veterans in the criminal justice system.  Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona Beach Chapter 1048, J J Martin, Rod Phillips, and other VVA1048 volunteers along with other veteran organizations such as Team Red, White and Blue, and Wounded Warriors are the primary Mentors.   

    Military veterans are unique in that they undergo vigorous physical training emphasizing survival, endurance, and courage. They are also molded to respect authority, serve selflessly, and abide by the codes of duty, honor, and patriotism. Although these are admirable traits, these characteristics have the potential for extreme emotional and mental strain for those leaving military service and reintegrating into civilian life.
The military acknowledges that veterans have distinctive needs and that they may require treatment to deal with Post-Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), substance abuse, mental health, and suicidal thoughts. The courts have also recognized these needs and in 2008 the country’s first Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) was implemented in Buffalo, New York. Since then more programs have been implemented throughout the country, including several in Florida.

Veterans Treatment Courts follow a positive, authoritative model to assist veterans with resolving legal matters while linking veterans to services to which they are entitled. Therefore, these individuals already have medical, substance abuse, and mental health treatment benefits. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs can assist with daily needs such as housing and sustenance.

Members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona Beach Chapter 1048 helped teacher Chase Tramont tell the story of sacrifice made by nearly 58, 000 Americans in the Vietnam War.

At Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, students found themselves in the jungles of Vietnam.  After nearly 10 hours of setup, the classroom was transformed with camouflage netting on the walls, round helmets called “steel pots” on desks and reed grass sprouts standing tall from the floor. This way, the students could feel submersed in a more interactive, realistic environment for learning.  

Members of Chapter 1048 were brought back to their time in Vietnam. Ken Kisler was 26 in 1968 when he was drafted. He left behind a wife and 2-year-old son. He and the other members of his chapter that visited the classroom expressed the beauty of the country, but do not necessarily want to go back. The emotional burdens of war that they have carried are heavy.

Tramont has been doing this unit in his classroom for over six years, and has had support from many people. Much of his props are donated by veterans who support Tramont, who seeks to give his students experiences that will open their eyes and affect them more deeply than simply studying for a test.ere to add a brief description of one your services or programs.
